Storefront wording guardrails
The fastest way to get a store into trouble — with shoppers, with regulators, or with Shopify's Theme Store review — is to let a storefront sentence promise something the store doesn't actually deliver. This page is the shared reference for safe vs. unsafe wording across tax, shipping, product safety, environment, privacy, and withdrawal. Every EU & UK boundary guide links back here.
There is really only one rule, applied over and over:
Describe what a surface does, not what it guarantees. "VAT shown at checkout where applicable" describes behaviour. "EU VAT compliant" guarantees an outcome the theme can't deliver. The first is safe; the second is a claim you'd have to defend.
Why this matters
- Legal exposure. "Compliant," "guaranteed," and "fully handled" are outcome promises. If the outcome doesn't hold for a given shopper, order, or jurisdiction, the promise is the problem.
- Theme Store review. Shopify rejects themes and listings that overclaim — including claims about tax handling, AI, personalization, conversion lift, performance, and accessibility. Storefront copy is judged the same way.
- It's avoidable. Almost every unsafe claim has a safe equivalent that says the true, useful thing. Reach for that instead.
The pattern for fixing any claim
- Name the actor. Who actually does this — the theme, Shopify, an app, you? Put them in the sentence.
- Drop the guarantee word. Replace compliant / guaranteed / fully handled / automatic / no setup needed with what literally happens.
- Add the boundary. "where applicable," "in supported regions," "if configured," "you remain responsible for…".
Example: "VAT solved — fully compliant checkout" → "VAT and taxes are calculated at checkout where applicable. Tax settings are managed in Shopify admin; you remain responsible for registration and filing where required."

Beyond the EU & UK. The same rule holds wherever you sell. The theme never calculates tax anywhere — it shows what your Shopify settings produce. US sales tax (and whether you have nexus or economic nexus in a state), Canadian GST/HST and provincial PST/RST/QST, and import duties at a border are all calculated by Shopify settings, an app, or the carrier — and owed by you, not the theme.

These show up in store copy, "why shop with us" sections, and listing text. The same rule applies: describe behaviour, not outcomes.

A note on "compliant." Use the word only to explain a boundary — "this is not a compliance product," "we make no compliance guarantee." Never use it as a feature claim.
