Regulated products & age verification
For age-restricted or otherwise regulated products, Uisce gives you two display tools: warning surfaces on the product, and an age-verifier gate that asks a visitor to confirm they meet an age before continuing. Both are notices and deterrents — the theme can show a gate and a warning, but it cannot verify a shopper's real age or identity, confirm a product is legal to sell or ship to a given place, or enforce a restriction at checkout.
Not legal advice. This page explains what the age gate and warnings do, and what they don't.
Who does what
| Owns | In practice | |
|---|---|---|
| The theme (Uisce) | Display & deterrence | The age-verifier gate, warning text, restricted-product notices |
| Shopify admin / apps | Storage & checks | Product data; any real age/ID-verification app you connect; shipping restrictions |
| You + your advisers | Legality | Which products are restricted, where they may ship, accurate warnings, real verification duties |
The age verifier — what it is, and isn't
The age-verifier section shows an interstitial asking the visitor to confirm they meet a minimum age (or enter a birthdate) before they see the store or a product.
- It is a clear notice and a friction step — a self-attestation that signals a restriction and deters casual under-age access.
- It is not identity or age verification. It doesn't check ID, doesn't know the visitor's real age, and is trivially bypassed by anyone who clicks "yes." If your products legally require verified age or ID, you need a real verification process — typically an app or a check at delivery — not a storefront gate alone.
Treat the gate as the front door's notice, never as proof.
Restricted products — the boundary
Whether a product can be sold, and where it can ship, is determined by law and by your arrangements — not by the theme. Use Shopify shipping zones to limit destinations (see Cross-border shipping), and state restrictions plainly on the product. The theme will faithfully show "not available in [region]" if you write it; it won't stop an order you haven't actually restricted.
Warnings — the boundary
Show required warnings using a Custom Liquid block, an accordion, or the description. The theme renders them; their accuracy, completeness, and legal sufficiency are yours. A warning shown is not a warning that necessarily meets a given jurisdiction's rules.
Safe vs. unsafe wording
Building on storefront wording guardrails:
- ✅ "You must be over [age] to purchase" · "Please confirm your age to continue" · "Not available in all regions — see details."
- ❌ "Age verified" · "Legally cleared for sale everywhere" · "Verified 18+" (from a self-attestation gate) · "Guaranteed compliant age check."

What this page is — and is not
This explains what the age gate and warning surfaces do, and where the theme stops. It is not legal advice. The age verifier is a self-attestation notice, not identity or age verification; the theme does not confirm a shopper's age, certify that a product is legal to sell or ship, or enforce a restriction at checkout. Which products are restricted, where they may ship, and what real verification you need remain yours to determine with a professional.
